Chinese govt seeks security for its nationals
By Zafar Bhutta
ISLAMABAD: China has asked Pakistan to provide security to its nationals working on water, power, oil, gas and other projects because of ‘looming danger’ after the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto, sources told Daily Times on Wednesday.
The sources said a high-level meeting had been convened in this regard by the Foreign Ministry on Thursday (today), which would be attended by the heads of Chinese companies working in Pakistan and officials from the Water and Power Ministry, Oil and Gas Ministry, and Interior Ministry.
The sources said the meeting would chalk out a comprehensive plan about security measures for Chinese nationals in consultation with the heads of the Chinese companies.
Between May 2004 and July 2007, there have been four terrorist attacks on Chinese nationals, besides two incidents of abduction. Chinese nationals working on water and power projects – especially on Gomal Zam Hydroelectric Project - have been victims of life and kidnapping attempts.
